Join the District 1 ASDA Team

Each District 1 Committee is led by one or two Chairs and a necessary number of committee members to support the function of the committee. Applications will be reviewed by the five chapter 1st and 2nd Delegate and the District 1 Trustee. VP’s will be voted on, followed by all other positions. All remaining applications will be considered for the Chair position. Chairs will be elected by majority rule, followed by vice-chairs. Special positions will also be elected by majority rule. As needed throughout the year, Chairs may nominate Members to assist with special projects. Members must be approved by the committee’s respective Vice President.

District 1 Cabinet Positions


The District 1 Trustee Team

The District 1 Trustee Team is made of the Trustee, Senior Advisor, 3 Vice Presidents, Chief of Staff, and Treasurer.

District 1 Senior Advisor

The district senior advisor is appointed by the trustee. It is traditionally held by the immediate past trustee,  but an immediate past vice president can also be appointed.   

District 1 Vice Presidents

The district vice presidents (VP) will work closely with the District 1 Trustee and Immediate Past Trustee in overseeing all the committees and activities of the district. The VPs will split their duties, be present at all cabinet meetings, setting up conference calls between committee, taking and distributing meeting minutes, organizing district emails, and assists in event planning for each district committee. They can also approve committee members nominated by committee chairs. The VP’s have the important job of maintaining communication and resources to all district and chapter leaders, holding chairs responsible for their duties and working as a team. Please read committee responsibilities carefully in addition to the specific actions items listed below.  

Responsibilities of all three Vice Presidents

  • Set up conference calls for committees
    • Set up joint calls as needed
  • Follow-up with district leaders
  • Assist committees in creating and distributing meeting minutes
  • Assist in the planning of all District 1 events including Summer Social, Annual Meeting & Gala, District 1 Debate, and the ASDA District 1 Boat Cruise
  • Preside at District 1 events
  • Work closely as the Trustee Team in overseeing all activities of the district
  • Ensure chairs are reaching out to national and chapter level counterparts
  • Works with the District 1 Trustee for District 1 Project: Barriers to Care

Individual Responsibilities of the Vice Presidents

  • VP Events
    • Oversee Sustainability Committee, Events Committee, and Pre-Dental Committee, and DEI Committee
  • VP Member Benefits
    • Oversee Professional Development Committee, Advocacy Committee, Wellness Committee
    • Strengthens the relationship between Committees and reduces redundancies
    • Other duties assigned by National Council on Advocacy and National Council on Professional Issues
  • VP Communication
    • Oversees Creative team and editorial staff
    • Responsible for assigning/approving roles to ensure Newsletter, Blog, Website, Instagram and Facebook are maintained
    • Other duties assigned by National Council on Communications

Chief of Staff

  • Oversee and update the district 1 calendar with meetings and events  
  • Send reminders and take minutes in full district cabinet meetings and presidential council meetings

Treasurer 

  • Manage the district bank account 
  • Oversee funds coming in and out of the account 
  • Maintain communications with sponsors and work closely with the events team
  • Oversee and serve as chair of the fundraising committee  

Committees

Events Committee

The events committee brings together all the district and chapter leaders for fun social events. The committee works hard with the chapter delegates to find dates that work for all schools, venues to hold social events, and event themes.

Events Chair

  • Plans and organizes the Summer Social, Annual Meeting & Gala, District 1 Debate, and the ASDA District 1 Boat Cruise
    • Includes Advocacy, Professional Development and Wellness Teams when planning events
  • Works closely with sponsors and dental societies to bring social events to District 1
  • Communicates with speakers, venues, manages event schedules, and relays information to Communications Team
  • Manages the budgets for district activities and events and raises funds for the district
  • Delegates specific scope of duties to vice-chairs and special positions  

Events Vice Chair (2)

  • Assists the Events Chair in organizing all events
  • Takes ownership of mutually agreed on scope of duties

Member Engagement Chair

  • Must be a student enrolled at UConn and nominated by either the 1st or 2nd delegate
  • Membership Chair promotes #ASDAfever throughout the entire district and aids in recruitment efforts  
  • Other duties as assigned by the National Council on Membership

Director of Digital Programming

  • Communicates with the other district committees on events, activities, and planning
  • Facilitates web-based events. Must be proficient in at least one of the following:
    • Zoom meet-ups, Instagram TV, Facebook Live and YouTube

Predental Committee

The predental committees works with all the chapters to promote predental involvement at the national, district and local levels. Providing networking opportunities, webinars, and leadership development skills to members. They specifically work with undergraduate predental societies and the predental committees of each District 1 chapter to set up meetings, disseminate information, and promote ASDA membership.

Predental Chair

  • Coordinates with each district school’s predental efforts and predental visits
  • Organizes a predental track during the Annual District 1 Meeting
  • Compiles predental contacts for the district
  • Maintains communication with predental ASDA members and predental ASDA chapters keeping all members informed
  • Works closely with the Predental Advisory Committee
  • Hosts webinars, sends emails, and acts as a mentor to predental members

Predental Vice-Chair (2)

  • Assists the Chair
  • Takes ownership of mutually agreed on scope of duties

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Committee

This committee will help to educate District 1 on national initiatives, foster community, and conduct programming focused on diversity and inclusion.

DEI Chair 

  • The Chair will stay up-to-date on national initiatives and develop programming for our district meeting.
  • Gathers information about diversity and inclusion from district members to foster a sense of community and belonging
  • Conducts programming focused on diversity & inclusion at the District 1 Meeting
  • Creates digital content as a resource for students inquiring about diversity and inclusion   

DEI Vice-Chair (2)

  • Assists the Chair
  • Takes ownership of mutually agreed on scope of duties

Ethics and Sustainability Committee

The committee directly reports to the VP of Events. Ethics & Sustainability Committee will act as a resource to educate students in District 1 on how as dentists they can be more environmentally conscious.

Sustainability Chair

  • Create events and initiatives to educate students in the district on these topics.
  • Create resources for students to access to educate themselves.

Fundraising Committee 

The fundraising committee reports directly to the Treasurer. Fundraising keeps the  district running, by reaching out to sponsors and maintaining the budgets for all district events. Through  their efforts, the district raises money to sponsor students to national conferences. They make all of our  district ideas come to life and bring each school together.

  • Assists the treasurer in funding all events

Communications Committee

The committee directly reports to the VP of Communications. The communications committee builds, designs, and updates all the District 1 communication platforms; newsletter, blog, website, print and social media. They contact district leaders and chapter delegates to get pictures and recaps from events, recruit members to write for the blog (District 1 Pearls), the newsletter (Pulp Fiction), and provide members the ability to access information and resources through the district website and email. They also take photos and write articles. The committee creates flyers for district events, recruits’ writers, and posts on the District 1 Facebook and Instagram in a cohesive style.

Creative Director (Chair)

  • Works closely with the VP of Communications and Editor-in-Chief
  • Webmaster of the District 1 website
    1. Updates the website bi-weekly
  • Coordinates posts on the District 1 Instagram and Facebook feed and story
  • Enables, encourages and promotes district events and committees to share information through all platforms and/or by:
    1. Designing flyers
    2. Asking specific members for event recaps and pictures
    3. Taking photographs at district events
  • Must be proficient in at least one of the following:
    1. Canva, Lucidpress, WordPress, Adobe Suit (Photoshop, Illustrator or Dreamweaver).
  • Delegates specific scope of duties to vice-chairs and special positions  

Assistant Creative Director (Vice Chair)

  • Assists the Creative Director
  • Takes ownership of mutually agreed on scope of duties
  • Recommended experience or willingness to learn at least one of the following:
    1. Canva, Lucidpress, WordPress, Adobe Suit (Photoshop, Illustrator or Dreamweaver).

Social Media Guru

  • Assists the Creative Director
  • Takes ownership of mutually agreed on scope of duties
  • Must be proficient with Instagram

Editor-in-chief (Chair)

  • Works closely with the VP of Communications and Creative Director
  • Recruits members to write for District 1 Pearls and Pulp Fiction
    • Produces two, Fall and Spring, newsletters (which must include 1-2 unique feature articles).
    • Monthly blog posts (which may be used in the newsletter as needed)
  • Establishes deadlines for articles
  • Edits all written communication
  • Maintains contact with Trustee Team for assistance and provides update reports

Contributing Editor (Vice Chair)

  • Assists the Editor-in-Chief
  • Takes ownership of mutually agreed on scope of duties

Wellness Committee

The committee directly reports to the VP of Member Benefits. #BeWellASDA has swept our organization, reminding us of the importance of the five dimensions of wellness. The Wellness Committee coordinates with ASDA National initiatives, district, and local chapter events to promote self-care and compassion. The committee also reaches out to local dental societies and the district committees to create and promote wellness events.

Wellness Chair

  • Promotes ASDA National and district wellness challenge initiatives
  • Designs and facilitates wellness events and components into district events
  • Maintains communication with the chapter wellness committees
  • Maintain wellness challenges through social media
    • Including District 1 Health and Wellness Facebook page

Wellness Vice Chair(s)

  • Assists the Chair
  • Takes ownership of mutually agreed on scope of duties

Advocacy Committee

The committee directly reports to the VP of Member Benefits. The Advocacy Committee works endlessly to organize and plan events and informative lectures to better our profession. Together, the committee works with the chapter leaders to help organize ADPAC drives, Engage drives, act as liaisons to District 1 members looking to become more involved in their state dental societies, and relays national efforts to members. The Advocacy Committee will work as liaisons between district and local chapters and serve as a resource to help local chapters achieve their goals while promoting advocacy overall.

Advocacy Chair

  • Communicates with the Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Maine State Dental Societies
    • Reaches out to New Hampshire and Vermont Dental Societies
  • Motivates and distributes information about how to lobby, how to write a resolution, licensure reform, etc
  • Works with the chapter delegates to increase ADPAC enrollment and ADA Signing Day
  • Updates and promotes Nation ASDA Engage platform as well as nation resources to chapters
  • Coordinates school advocacy events and works closely with each school legislative liaisons

Advocacy Vice-Chair(s)

  • Assists the Chair
  • Takes ownership of mutually agreed on scope of duties

Professional Development Committee

The committee directly reports to the VP of Member Benefits. The Committee of Professional Development works to educate District 1 students on topics not covered in dental school including business considerations, personal branding, social media presence, etc. Together, the committee stands to be the ultimate career resource aimed at giving its members the tools to succeed in whatever they choose to be their next step after school whether it be residency, corporate dentistry, private practice, research, or academia, including providing mentorship.

Professional Development Chair

  • Sets up workshops and/or speakers in conjunction with District 1 events to improve member’s CVs, offer professional headshots, and offer advice on portfolio improvement,
    • Provide speakers that discuss finance, marketing, buying of practices, hiring employees and quality control in healthcare to enhance our member’s perspective on such a dynamic healthcare field
  • Updates and promotes National ASDA career resources to chapters through ASDA leadership and Chapters’ business/entrepreneurial clubs
    • Creates informative documents for members to use as a resource
      • Works with Communication Team disseminate these perspectives

Professional Development Vice-Chair (2)

  • Assists the Chair
  • Takes ownership of mutually agreed on scope of duties
